Building The Story

Inspired by a talk novelist Dave Eggers gave on supporting artisans and celebrate handcraft, Erik Katz has founded the pioneering Maker Mart in San Francisco. A market that pops up at the historic old mint every year, it offers fairly priced stalls to makers; democratising the retail space by allowing them to make larger profit margins and to mark down products they'd normally have to hike up to cover costs.

Through an interview with Emily Jane Staples, further online exchanges between Erik and I, and deeper research to help inform my overall perspective, this ghostwritten article contextualises the knee jerk response of one man giving a real life dimension to what was essentially another man’s dream. The reader comes to understand the culture of constructivism that’s driving the scene, the collaborations between science and art required to carry on hacking, why the creative revival matters on a local level and how it fits into the broader global resurgence.

[San Francisco] has a long history of trendsetting and supporting independence. That first started with the Gold Rush when people set out to create their own destiny. This has become a theme; it’s a DIY city that’s chic, unique and cutting-edge.
