Building The Story

The genesis of my work on Juliette Ashby has been somewhat organic: I went to see her at a gig, was blown away, she walked right by me and I took the chance to introduce myself and tell her what I do. Huck Magazine was just starting a YouTube channel and crucially, a music series. As a result I spoke to her at length with a film crew behind me at Camden’s Jazz Café, where she has a residency.

The video (below) gives a small insight into the contrast between Juliette Ashby, the person and the performer. The editorial short piece (above) is crafted from the same interview and captures the running parallels in her life: a husky voice yet sweet tone, a relaxed vibe yet momentous lyrics, a tragic past yet blessed future.

I can speak to you about her [Amy Winehouse] and detach myself a little bit, but I’m not very good at talking. My music is my therapy, I don’t know anything else. It’s the only way I can express myself.
